Sony WH1000XM3 vs Bose 700: Best Noise Canceling Headphones

When searching for the best noise-canceling headphones, the first options that come to your mind are Sony WH1000XM3 and Bose 700. Bose Corporation and Sony have manufactured high-quality headphones for travel, but these are great for your open-floor-plan office too!

Sony surpassed the classic Bose QC35 headphones, but with the introduction of Bose 700, Bose stepped up their game to match Sony. Sony WH1000XM3 and Bose 700 have lots in common and choosing between them is difficult. Here is a comparison between these two noise-canceling headphones to help you make a choice:

Fit

Both headphone models are comfortable when wearing. However, Bose 700 is weightier when you hold it but when on your head, you’ll not notice any difference. Still, on the fit, Bose 700 will fit tightly around your ears whereas Sony WH1000XM3 will feel looser. Your personal preference will determine your choice if how the earphones fit is your biggest consideration.

Design

If you want the sleekest noise-canceling headphones for your travel adventures, Bose will take the win. The headphones have clean, well-rounded lines, and an amazing appearance which will make Sony headphones look old fashioned. Based on your personal preference and your opinion about beauty, you may still prefer Sony noise-canceling headphones.

Noise Canceling Ability

Bose 700 is more effective in noise-canceling compared to Sony WH1000XM3 as it has 20 active noise canceling levels. If you are very sensitive when it comes to noise-canceling frequencies, Bose 700 will give you the ability to reduce or increase the ANC strength whenever necessary. Both models have an option where you can switch off the active noise canceling ability.

If the pressure brought about by these noise-canceling frequencies bothers you, using Bose 700 will give you better control and a more pleasant experience. Any time you need to lower the ANC strength, there will be no limitation. However, if you still prefer to use the Sony WH100XM3, you can still be in control by completely switching off the ANC.

Battery Life

Considering the battery life, Sony WH1000XM3 takes the win as you’ll enjoy 30 hours of continued use. Bose 700, on the other hand, only lasts for 20 hours but with 2 ½ hours of charging, the battery will be full again and you can continue using your headphones. If you are in a rush, you can charge the headphones for 15 minutes to allow you to use the headphones for the next 3 ½ hours.

Sony model takes longer when charging as you’ll need 3 hours to fully charge it. You can speed up the charging using a power adapter which will allow you to enjoy 5 hours of continued use after charging for only 10 minutes.

Though Bose 700 has a shorter battery life, you’ll be able to continue using it once you plug it in for charging. Sony WH1000XM3 is disabled when charging and this means you have to postpone what you were doing before the headphones ran out of charge.

Sound Quality

Both Sony and Bose noise-canceling headphones have a fantastic sound quality and will allow you to listen to your preferred tunes. However, Sony WH1000XM3 has a better balance and will make the sound smoother. It also has more bass which will sound good with dense mixes.

Using Bose’s simple app, you’ll have 10 noise-canceling levels to choose from when using your headphones and this will give you better control. However, when it comes to keeping off mid-tones or treble, these headphones are not very good at it. You’ll have trouble blocking random chatters or noise coming from people walking nearby.

If you love a higher volume for your headsets, Sony headsets will be the best option as they are louder than other noise-canceling headsets. It will not be possible to get a volume as high when using Bose 700 headphones.

Portability

Sony WH1000XM3 is more portable as you’ll be able to swivel and fold it into an amazing little handful. The headphones are made from plastic which makes it easier to fold them up and put them safely in their case. For the Bose 700, however, you can only swivel it flat when carrying it around. Bose 700’s carrying case is larger to accommodate the high-end material that is impossible to fold.

Call clarity

Though you’ll be able to receive and make calls with either Bose 700 or Sony WH1000XM3 headphones, you’ll get a more audible voice with Bose 700. The calls will be clear and there’s little interference from external noise.

Control & Functionality

Both headphone models have some buttons and touchpad control on their earcups for control. You’ll be able to play, skip, pause, track or even make and receive calls. The headphones will also allow you to set up a voice assistant so that you can make a hands-free call.

Cost

Bose noise-canceling headsets are more expensive at $399 and if you are looking for a more affordable option, Sony WH1000XM3 would better at $348.

When making your choice, the big question is always, is the high cost of Bose 700 worth it?

At first, you may feel that the high amount you’ll be paying for the Bose 700 headphones is not worth it since they function almost in the same way as the Sony WH1000XM3 headphones. However, once you begin to use them:

  • Bose noise cancelation headphones have the advanced AR technology that gives you the ability to interact with the surroundings using your headphones. For instance, instead of using your phone’s screen to get directions via navigation apps, the AR app will provide info about your surroundings. When giving this information, the direction your head is facing and your location will play a huge role.
  • To test the effectiveness of the AR app, you can simply tilt your head towards a nearby landmark and your headphones will identify the landmark. In places where there are multiple landmarks in the vicinity, you may get confused as the app will spit out the landmarks one after the other. This means the information provided may not be enough to tell your actual location at that time. We hope that as Bose continues to advance, they will make it possible to identify a specific location with minimal confusion.
  • You’ll love the excellent noise cancellation ability compared to other headphones.
  • You will also love the spectacular call quality in both audio and mic quality. You can make and receive calls from any place however noisy and hear the person on the other end.
  • Using the music app, you’ll be able to control the level of noise cancellation. This means you’ll be in better control when using the headphones.

Based on these functionalities, you’ll be getting value for your money when buying Bose noise cancelation headphones.

My Take…

Both Bose 700 and Sony WH1000XM3 are great noise cancelation headphones that will allow you to have an immersive experience wherever you are. Bose 700 headphones, which are $50 more than Sony headphones have additional features such as the 11 levels noise cancelation ability and the AR technology that makes the high price worth it.

Considering the battery life, Sony headphones take the lead as you get 30 hours of continuous use. If you travel a lot or you’ll be in a place where charging will be an issue, these would be the right headphones for you. If they ran out of charge, you’ll only need to charge them for 10 minutes and you’ll use them for the next 5 hours.

Bose lags when you consider the battery life as it will only last for 20 hours and to use it for 3 ½ hours, you’ll need to charge it for 15 minutes. If, on the other hand, you prefer a more stylish headphone that will give you a touch of class when using them, Bose 700 noise-canceling headsets take the lead.

Whatever choice you make when buying your noise-canceling headsets, you will be getting a good bargain. The stylish and more expensive Bose 700 headset or the Sony WH1000XM3 are reputable headset models that will allow you to keep off any noise around you when traveling, at the office or home.
